Choosing Accessible Tactile Card Themes for October

How We Chose the October Box Themes for the Blind
At Be Tactile, every Tactile Treasures box is thoughtfully curated for the blind and low-vision community. Selecting themes for the October box meant balancing accessibility, seasonal relevance, and tactile delight. Here’s how we approached it.
Holiday Village

Designed for beginners or younger makers, this card features a house nearly the size of the card base. Tactile glitter represents snow on the roof and window seals, while a twine bow holds a circular punched greeting stamped “‘Tis The Season.” Three small foam-backed wreaths add texture and dimension. This card is simple enough for tactile exploration while delivering a festive holiday feeling.
Plane & Simple

This moderately advanced card honors veterans with tactile layers inspired by aviation. Three designer paper rectangles guide placement with braille dots: a red-brick patterned base, a map-like airspace layer, and a soft white-blue layer with helicopters. Two original airplane illustrations correspond across the layout, paired with the pre-stamped greeting “You’re the Best Plane & Simple.” This card combines tactile precision with patriotic storytelling.
Turkey Time

For Thanksgiving, we created a layered turkey on light brown craft paper. Four wings are stacked using braille-guided placement, helping makers achieve alignment. The pre-stamped greeting “Happy Thanksgiving” sits on a rectangular base. This card provides a satisfying challenge while reinforcing tactile learning and dexterity.
Optional Add-On Cards: Haunted Mansion & Simple Nativity Scene

We know that sometimes there aren’t cards for in-between holidays. That’s why this box includes optional add-ons:
- Haunted Mansion: Multi-layered mansion with orange and black house pieces, windows, shutters, ghosts, bats, pumpkins, a tombstone, and a fence. Heavy cardstock, metallic paper, and glitter add tactile contrast and spooky fun.
-
Simple Nativity Scene: Elegant and simple, this card features black, deep navy, and gold-embossed pieces. The minimal design emphasizes the Nativity story through texture and layout rather than visual complexity. With the background very tactile focused:
onsists of tightly rolled ribbon that resembles shiny vertical sprinkle beads, adding texture and festive sparkle.
